About Linda Jamii

Linda Jamii was a revolutionary family medical care product that was developed by Britam in conjunction with Changamka Micro-insurance and Safaricom. It was an inpatient and outpatient medical scheme with funeral expenses benefits built into it. Using the M-Pesa money transfer platform and a robust e-health IT system, it delivered an innovative administration and service to the Kenyan market.

HOW IT WORKED

A subscriber subscribed to an e-card that enabled them to save exclusively towards the purchase of health insurance for their family using MPESA.

Outpatient cover of Kshs 50,000 (Inclusive of dental and optical sub-limits of Kshs 5,000 each).
Inpatient cover of Kshs 200,000 (Inclusive of a maternity sub-limit of Kshs 30,000).
Hospital cash of Kshs 500 per day for inpatient hospitalization of more than 2 days for a maximum of 60 days a year (principal & spouse only).
Funeral expense cover of Kshs 40,000 (principal & spouse only).

Kenyan citizen with a valid national ID or a valid Kenyan passport. The applicants must be members of a registered group, chama, SME or corporate entity that has not less than 3 adult members.(if applicable).

The policyholder (principal member) and nominated spouse should both not be less than 18 years old.
The maximum entry age for this policy for both principal and spouse is 75 years.
The minimum entry age under this policy for a child as a dependent is one (1) month and the final applicable age is 18 years.
An adult child aged between 18 years and 25 years can be covered under this policy as a dependent, subject to proof of enrollment in a school, college or university on a full time basis. This proof must be submitted annually.

Claims Process

In-patient service was procured from Britam accredited hospitals. The client presented their card at hospitals who would check validity and render service upon co-pay of kshs 100/- for outpatient services.

For last respect claims, Clients presented an original burial permit, ID of the deceased and ID of beneficiary to an appointed agency. These were scanned certified and returned to the client. The benefit was payable within 72 hours of notification and sent to the beneficiaries MPESA account.
Hospital cash claims were payable if the principal or spouse was admitted to hospital. Benefit was payable within the earlier of 48 hrs of discharge or every 7th day of confinement until expiry of 60 days confinement.

General Exclusions

The cover excluded: expenses incurred by a member as a result of

  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Treatment by chiropractors, acupuncturists and herbalists, stays and/ or maintenance or treatment received in nature cure clinics or similar establishments or private beds registered within a nursing home, convalescence and / or rest homes.
  • Massage unless necessary for treatment i.e following accident.
  • Fertility treatment related to infertility and impotence
  • Vaccines
  • Investigations, treatment, surgery for obesity or its sequel, cosmetic or beauty treatment and/or surgery.
  • Period of stay at sanatoria, old age homes, places of rest etc.

2. Could an individual take Linda Jamii?

NO, You could still access your benefits until the expiry date of your policy, however from June 1st 2015 there was no renew or new individual applications. Clients could still renew their covers on or before June 1st 2015.

3. How many members of my family could I include in the cover?

You could include one wife and as many own children as they are in the family.

4. Who was eligible after June 1st 2015?

5. What were the benefits of Linda Jamii?

Linda Jamii had the following benefits:

Medical

Outpatient – The annual family benefit was pegged at Kshs 50,000. However patient could co-pay Kshs 100 per visit per member. The benefit had a dental and optical sublimit of Kshs 5000 each derived from the outpatient limit .
Inpatient – A limit of Kshs 200,000 per year for the whole family
Maternity related services (normal delivery and Cesarean section) were covered under this benefit. The limit was Kshs 30,000 per year derived from the inpatient benefit

Funeral Expense

On death of principal or spouse, Kshs 40,000 was paid out to the appointed beneficiary. However, this benefit did not cater for death of children

Hospital Cash

If the principal or spouse was admitted into hospital, Kshs 500 was payable for every day spent in hospital subject to a minimum of 2 day stay. This meant that that the hospital cash was calculated from the third day spent in hospital. Hospital cash could only be claimed for a maximum of 60 days in a policy year

6. Did it have restrictions on age limits?

Yes. An applicant and the spouse must have been between 18 years of age and below 75 years at entry.
Children between 1 month and 18 years automatically qualified for inclusion. Those above 18 years up to 25 years could only be included if and only if they are students in school/college.

7. Could one start using the policy immediately after applying and paying for it?

The policy had a two (2) month waiting period for natural illnesses and death as a result of natural causes.
However, injuries or death resulting from accidental causes were covered from the commencement date.

8. When a member went to hospital, what was expected?

Process of disseminating Service at the Hospital
• Linda Jamii member visits the appointed Hospital
• The patient/Guardian produces the Linda Jamii card
• The hospital enquires the validity and limit from our online system
• Once validity is confirmed, the patient/Guardian is requested to pay Kshs 100 which is part of the entire bill (Out-patient only)
• Receive treatment

9. Could one go to any hospital once you take this policy?

No, there were approved hospitals that we had entered into contract with and these were the only ones to be visited. In case of an emergency and one was admitted in a hospital not in our panel, we needed to be notified within 24 hours through the customer care number (0708 525 525) indicated behind your card.

10. Were there conditions or sicknesses that this insurance did not cover?

Yes. Like other medical schemes, Linda Jamii had exclusions. These were:
1. Cosmetic surgery
2. Treatment by chiropractors, acupuncturists and herbalists, stays, maintenance or treatment received in nature cure clinics or similar establishments or private beds registered within a nursing home, convalescent and/or rest homes
3. Massage unless necessary for treatment i.e. following an accident
4. Fertility treatment related to infertility and impotence
5. Vaccines
6. Investigations, treatment, surgery for obesity or its sequel, cosmetic or beauty treatment and/or surgery
7. Period of stay at sanatoria, old homes, places of rest etc
8. Elective Surgery within the 1st policy year.

11. How did one claim Funeral Expense and Daily Hospital Cash benefit?

Funeral Expense
The beneficiary/claimant  visited their nearest Postbank outlet or Britam office with the original burial permit, Original Linda Jamii card of the deceased, the ID of the deceased and the ID of the claimant. Our staff took certified copies of these documents for processing of the benefit. The benefit were payable within 72 hours of notification and acceptance via the beneficiaries Mpesa account.
Hospital Cash
For the hospital cash benefit, there was no need to claim. The benefit was paid within 48 hours after discharge or after every 7th day of hospitalization until the expiry of the maximum 60 days of confinement
